BYU's Cummard, New Mexico's Giddens Receive All-American Honorable Mention Duo brings number of MWC All-American honorees to nine
April 1, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference men's basketball Co-Players of the Year continue to rack up the accolades, as BYU's Lee Cummard and New Mexico's J.R. Giddens received All-American honorable mention by the Associated Press on Monday. A 6-foot-7 forward from Mesa, Ariz., Cummard ranked first or second on the team in every statistical category while helping BYU to a 27-8 record and its second straight Mountain West title. Cummard led the Cougars in scoring (15.8 ppg), field-goal percentage (.569), three-point percentage (.472) and blocked shots (1.0 bpg) and ranked second on the team in rebounds (6.3 rpg), assists (3.5 apg), steals (0.9 spg) and free-throw percentage (.857). A 6-foot-5 guard from Oklahoma City, Okla., Giddens led New Mexico to a 24-9 record and third-place Mountain West finish this season. He averaged 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds in 2007-08, becoming the first guard to lead the MWC in rebounding, while also posting a league-best 18.3 scoring and 8.3 rebounding average during the 16-game conference schedule.
Over the nine-year history of the Mountain West Conference, nine individuals have received All-American honors from the Associated Press, including Utah's Andrew Bogut, who was a consensus All-American selection as the National Player of the Year in 2004-05.
