TCU moves to 2-0 with 59-53 win over Stephen F. Austin

Horned Frogs lead for final 38 minutes in victory

Nov. 14, 2006

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU Horned Frogs (2-0) outlasted the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (1-1) by a 59-53 count Tuesday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. TCU improved to 2-0 in games decided by 10 points or less after winning just three such games in 16 tries last year.

Stephen F. Austin, ranked 24th in the preseason mid-major Top 25 poll, scored the first basket of the night just 16 seconds into the game. However, the advantage lasted just one minute, and the Lumberjacks did not lead the rest of the way. The Horned Frogs had a double-digit margin on three occasions in the first half and led 33-25 at intermission.

After TCU built its largest lead of the game at 48-37 with 8:38 left to play in the second half, SFA used a 10-0 run over a three-minute span to get within one. However, TCU was able to stave off the Lumberjacks' rally by holding Stephen F. Austin to just four points over the game's final 4:45.

Nine different Horned Frogs entered the scoring column, but none reached double figures. Junior guard Brent Hackett had nine points to lead seven Frogs that had at least six points. TCU shot 48 percent from the floor and limited SFA to under 36 percent.

It was the lowest point total in a TCU win since a 58-51 victory over Houston on Jan. 19, 2005. Opponents are shooting just 36.6 percent this year.

TCU looks to improve to 3-0 for just the third time in 12 seasons when the team takes the Daniel-Meyer floor against Texas-Arlington Saturday at noon. Fans will be admitted to the game free with a ticket for the TCU-San Diego State football game, which begins at 3 p.m.
