Runnin' Rebels Roll In Season-Opener

Adams tallies a team-high 12 points in 73-59 victory over Hawai'i.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Wink Adams had 16 points and Joe Darger added 13 Friday as UNLV beat Hawai'i 73-59 Friday night in the season opener for both schools.

UNLV led by as many as 19 points in the first half, but Hawaii opened the second half with a 21-8 run to take a 48-46 lead with 10:52 to play.

The Rainbow Warriors' Matt Gibson had a game-high 20 points, including consecutive 3-pointers to cap the rally. But Adams scored six of UNLV's next eight points, highlighted by a 4-point play to break a 50-all tie and give the Rebels the lead for good at the 8:14 mark.

Darger connected on a pair of 3-pointers and the Rebels closed the game with a 19-7 run over the final 7:12, holding Hawaii without a field goal in the final six minutes.

UNLV scored 15 straight points to spark a 23-4 run to start the game.

Joel Anthony had eight of his 10 points during the run and finished one blocked shot short of the school record with eight.

Kevin Kruger added 12 points and five assists for UNLV, while Michael Umeh had seven and Wendell White added six. Ahmet Gueye had 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Hawaii.
