MWC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week No. 11 New Mexico's Mike Brownstein awarded first weekly award, while SDSU's Strasburg brings home sixth weekly accolade.
May 5, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico junior second baseman Mike Brownstein and San Diego State sophomore right-hander Stephen Strasburg have been named Mountain West Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week. This is the first weekly award of the season for Brownstein and the sixth for Strasburg (fourth consecutive). Brownstein led the Lobos offensively, as UNM took two-of-three games from conference foe BYU last week. From the leadoff position, he hit .533 (8-for-15) from the plate with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and four runs scored. In the first game of the series, Brownstein went 3-for-6, with two RBI and one run scored in the Lobos' 9-7 victory. In game two, he was a home run short of hitting for the cycle on the way to a 3-for-4, two run scored performance in a 13-5 loss. In the series finale, Brownstein went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in New Mexico's 15-6 win. Strasburg, a San Diego, Calif., native, tossed a complete-game shutout in the Aztecs' 15-0 win at Air Force last Friday. He allowed just three hits in the contest, striking out 11 and walking one. With a runner on third base with one out in the seventh inning, Strasburg struck out the next two batters to preserve the shutout. Only one other runner reached as far as second base for the game. With his 11 K's, he has taken over the national lead in strikeouts (110). Strasburg has now just allowed one run in his last 46 innings on the mound.
