THIS WEEK IN THE MWC
This week's baseball schedule kicks off Tuesday with four league institutions in action. Headlining the slate is TCU hosting No. 5 Texas A&M and San Diego State visiting 20th-ranked Arizona. Other Tuesday games include BYU at Northern Colorado and UNLV at Cal State Northridge. Wednesday's out of league schedule pits the Aztecs at Arizona and the Rebels at Cal State Northridge in two-game series finales, and TCU at Texas-Arlington.
The Conference play schedule is highlighted by Friday and Saturday's match-up between first-place New Mexico and BYU, which will be shown live on BYUTV and tape-delayed on The Mtn. Friday's contest will be shown on The Mtn., Saturday, May 3 at 5 p.m. MT, while Saturday's match-up will re-air on The Mtn., Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m. MT. In other league action, Air Force hosts San Diego State, while TCU welcomes Utah to Lupton Stadium. UNLV will take on Cal Poly in non-conference action this weekend.
SDSU'S STRASBURG EARNS SECOND LOUISVILLE SLUGGER NATIONAL HONOR
San Diego State sophomore right-hander Stephen Strasburg was named one of three Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week for the second time this season on April 28.
Strasburg threw a one-hit complete-game in SDSU's 4-1 win over TCU last Friday. It was his second nine-inning, one hitter in his last three starts. He retired the first 18 batters he faced before a leadoff double in the seventh. A wild pitch and ground out to second scored the Horned Frogs only run of the contest. The seventh was the only frame he allowed a runner to reach base. He then retired the side in order in both the eighth and ninth for his sixth win of the season. He finished the night with 13 strikeouts, including three of the game's final four outs as TCU hit .034 for the contest.
TWO MWC STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO 2008 HOWSER TROPHY WATCH LIST
San Diego State's Stephen Strasburg and UNLV first baseman Xavier Scruggs were two of 50 candidates named to the 2008 Dick Howser Trophy Watch List, released April 24 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The Dick Howser Trophy is given to the top player in collegiate baseball. The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball's most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser's life.
The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Dick Howser Trophy based on three rounds of voting. The 2008 winner will be announced at the College World Series in Omaha on Saturday, June 14, at 10:00 a.m. CDT.
