MWC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week No. 10

Air Force's Addison Gentry and San Diego State's Stephen Strasburg honored.

April 28, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Air Force sophomore Addison Gentry and San Diego State sophomore right-hander Stephen Strasburg have been named Mountain West Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week. This is the second weekly award of the season for Gentry and the fifth for Strasburg.

Gentry, from Roseville, Calif., batted .545 (6-for-11) on the week with a grand slam, seven RBI and four runs scored in leading Air Force to a series win over BYU. The series win was the Falcons' first in MWC play since the 2005 season. Gentry went 4-for-6, including a walk-off grand slam in AFA's 13-9 game one win, snapping the Falcons' 55-game Conference losing streak. In a game two loss, he went 2-for-4, and ended the series reaching base three times (walk and two hit by pitches) and being credited with two RBI and one run scored in an 11-10 victory.

Strasburg threw a one-hit complete-game in SDSU's 4-1 win over TCU last Friday. It was his second nine-inning, one hitter in his last three starts. He retired the first 18 batters he faced before a leadoff double in the seventh. A wild pitch and ground out to second scored the Horned Frogs only run of the contest. The seventh was the only frame he allowed a runner to reach base. He then retired the side in order in both the eighth and ninth for his sixth win of the season. He finished the night with 13 strikeouts, including three of the game's final four outs as TCU hit .034 for the contest.
