TCU'S Ellington and UNLV's Scruggs Named MWC Baseball Co-Players of the Week; New Mexico's LaFromboise Named MWC Pitcher of the Week

April 7, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU junior Chris Ellington and UNLV junior Xavier Scruggs were named Mountain West Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week, while New Mexico senior left-hander Bobby LaFromboise was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Ellington, from Weatherford, Texas, helped TCU to a 5-0 record on the week, including an upset win over then-No. 29 Baylor and a three-game sweep of Air Force in league play. On the week he batted .400 (8-for-20) with two home runs, four doubles, nine RBI and four runs scored. In the Horned Frogs' 3-2 upset victory over the Bears, Ellington drove in the game-winning run with an eighth- inning double to center. He followed with career-highs in hits (4), runs scored (3), RBI (6) and home runs (2) in TCU's 12-8 comeback victory at Texas State. In a 6-3 game two win over Air Force, Ellington went 1-for-3 with a two-run double, while also scoring a run. In the final game of the series, he sparked TCU's three-run ninth inning rally with a double, advancing a base runner to third, in the Frogs' 3-2 win.

Scruggs, a San Diego, Calif., product, went 7-for-14 (.500) from the plate with two home runs, one double, nine RBI and four runs scored last week. In game one of a three-game series vs. BYU, Scruggs went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, three RBI and one run scored in a 10-7 loss. In a 10-9 game two win, he smashed an RBI double and scored two more runs as part of a 2-for-3 plate performance, and concluded the week with a 3-for-5, five RBI outing in a game three loss. Scruggs hit his eighth round-tripper of the season, while scoring another run of his own. Defensively, Scruggs had 32 putouts with one assist and no errors from his first base position.

In his first appearance in two weeks, LaFromboise threw his first complete game of the season in UNM's 5-2 series opening win over league-leading San Diego State. After giving up two earned runs in the second inning, the Downey, Calif., native, did not allow a base runner past second base for the rest of the game, giving up just two hits and striking out seven to bring home the victory.
