No. 1 TCU Defeats New Mexico At MWC Baseball Tournament Horned Frogs post 18-6 win over Lobos. May 25, 2006 LAS VEGAS - The top-seeded TCU Horned Frogs (36-21) used a highly offensive attack over the fifth-seeded New Mexico Lobos to advance to the Thursday's 4 pm contest with the unbeaten and second-seeded BYU Cougars. The Frogs disposed of the Lobos by an 18-6 tally. The Lobos drop to the loser's bracket and will play the sixth-seeded Utah Utes in an elimination game Thursday at 12:30 p.m. PT. The Lobos will need to win their game with Utah to stay alive for a rematch with the fourth-seeded UNLV Rebels at 7:30 pm Thursday night. The game began as a tight contest through the first 3.5 innings with New Mexico holding a 5-4 advantage, but TCU broke open the affair with six runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 10-4 lead. The Frogs kept their offense rolling as they tallied eight more runs on a total of 19 hits. TCU's Jake Arrieta (13-4) picked up the win as he tossed 7.0 innings. Arrieta allowed six runs on nine hits, while striking out six and walking three. New Mexico used a slew of hurlers with Jesse Perez (2-4) suffering the defeat. Perez threw 3.2 innings in the start, but surrendered nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits. Offensively, for TCU four batters collected three hits, while seven knocked in at least one RBI. Andrew Walker led the way for the Horned Frogs as he went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, six RBI and four runs scored. New Mexico had three hitters with two hits, while all six RBI were plated by six different individuals. The momentum of the game swung in the bottom of the fourth when TCU came to bat trailing 5-4. TCU put six runs up on the scoreboard on five hits. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Chad Huffman and Austin Adams. Huffman closed out Perez's outing, while Adams welcomed Quentin Andes to the game. Huffman's shot went for two-runs.
TCU scored two runs in the fifth and six more in the seventh for their 18-run mark. New Mexico took an early 1-0 lead on a run-scoring single by Chris Carlson in the first inning. TCU answered that score with one of their own in the bottom of the frame on a single by Huffman. After scoring its first run, the Horned Frogs never looked back. |
