LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Bobby LaFromboise scattered six hits over a complete nine innings to carry fifth-seeded New Mexico to a 1-0 shutout of fourth-seeded San Diego State in the second game of the Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Wednesday. The Lobos, who improved to 27-28 overall, advanced to face second-seeded BYU on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. PT. The Aztecs, who fell to 28-29 with their 10th loss in the last 11 games, dropped into the losers' bracket and will play Wednesday night at 7 p.m. PT against third-seeded Utah in an elimination game. The game was just the second 1-0 contest in MWC Tournament history, and broke a four-game losing streak by New Mexico to SDSU in MWC Tournament action. New Mexico scored the lone run of the game in the first inning, helped by a wild pitch that allowed Jordan Pacheco to reach first safely. He then moved to second on a groundout and scored on Matt Hibbitts' RBI single to left field for a 1-0 Lobo advantage. That run would hold up the entire game, as the Aztecs could not break into the scoring column against the pitching of LaFromboise. SDSU did make a final charge in the bottom of the ninth, placing runners on first and second with two outs, thanks to singles from Garett Green and Troy Hanzawa. Shortstop Scott Gracey saved the day for New Mexico however, as he made a diving grab of a Joseph Spiers' grounder and threw him out at first base to give the Lobos the victory. LaFromboise pitched just his second complete game of the year to improve to 7-3, while walking five and throwing six strikeouts. SDSU pitcher Bruce Billings also threw a complete game, allowing seven hits over nine innings with one run, two walks, and two strikeouts. Seven Lobos finished with one hit apiece, while Green and Hanzawa's two hits each paced the Aztecs.
