ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The BYU men and women lead the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships after two days of competition at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Colorado State senior Kevin Johnson set a CSU school and MWC Championship record for points (5,569) on his way to the win in the men's heptathlon. Johnson's point total also ranks as the second-highest in conference history. Air Force's Brian Wash, the 2006 heptathlon champion, finished second with 5,539 points, while BYU sophomore Justin Palmer finished third (5,188). Wyoming senior Olav Roe was fifth on the list (5,119), followed by BYU's Noah Garfield (5,018), Wyoming's Phillip Thomas (4,909) and Air Force's Skylar Morgan (4,740). BYU's Kevin Keys rounded out the scoring with a point total of 4,637.

On the men's side, Wyoming and Colorado State are tied for second (53 points), followed by Air Force (35), New Mexico (19) and TCU (3).

Colorado State is currently in second place on the women's side (46 points), followed by San Diego State (30), Wyoming (20), Utah (18.5), TCU (7), Air Force (5), UNLV (4) and New Mexico (3).

2007 MWC Indoor Track and Field Championships Notes:

· BYU sophomore Whitney McDonald became the sixth BYU runner in seven years to capture the 5,000 meter run crown, winning the race in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:35.81. Colorado State senior Nicole Feest, last year's champion, finished second in 17:12.27, while BYU sophomore Amber Duffin crossed the finish line third (17:13.65).

 

 

· BYU senior Josh Rohatinsky won the men's 5,000m with a MWC Championship and facility record time of 14:26.92. New Mexico senior Jeremy Johnson was the runner-up for the second straight year (14:44.35), followed by Colorado State senior Rob Watson (15:00.10). This is BYU's first-ever victory in the men's 5,000m.

· Wyoming senior Blake Jackson won the men's long jump with a mark of 23'-11.00" (7.29m). Jackson finished fourth as a junior in the 2005 men's championship. BYU sophomore Justin Palmer finished second with a mark of 22'-10.50" (6.97m), while Colorado State sophomore Ciarre Campbell finished third (22'-7.75" [6.90m]).

· Wyoming senior Shannon Popp won the women's weight throw with a career-best and provisional qualifying mark of 63'-6.00" (19.35m). Her distance is also the fourth-best in women's championship history. BYU junior Tipaleli Fotu finished second with a mark of 61'-7.00" (18.77m) and Utah senior Becky Riddle was third with a distance of 59'-0.00" (17.98m).

· Sophomore Jake Shanklin completed the Wyoming weight throw sweep as he brought home the men's title with a provisional qualifying mark of 66'-10.75" (20.39m). Colorado State's Trey Eder also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with his toss of 64'-3.00" (19.58m). CSU's Jason Schutz rounded out the top three with a mark of 63'-7.75" (19.40m).

· BYU senior David Pendergrass became the first three-time champion in the men's high jump, clearing 7'-1.00" (2.16m) as the Cougars swept the top-3 spots for the second straight year. Pendergrass won his sixth MWC high jump title overall, adding to his 2006, '05 and '02 outdoor crowns...teammates Bryce Bergen (junior) and Ammon Dahl (junior) finished second and third, respectively, with marks of 6'-9.50" (2.07m) and 6'-7.50" (2.02m).

· BYU won its sixth-straight MWC women's distance medley relay title, clocking a Championships and Albuquerque Convention Center record of 11:37.96. The Cougars have won all but one DMR race in MWC history...CSU finished second (12:25.63) and San Diego State was third (12:32.62).

· The Cougars also won their fifth straight men's distance medley relay title, finishing with time of 10:01.45. Air Force was second (10:02.07), followed by Wyoming (10:05.33).

· San Diego State freshman Stephanie Bagan became the fourth straight Aztec and the fifth in six years to win the pole vault crown with a clearance of 13'-5.25" (4.10m). Her mark ties third best height in MWC history.

· CSU senior Janay DeLoach defended her long jump title with a mark of 20'-7.25" (6.28m). BYU's Mindy Neeley finished second with a distance of 20'-3.50" (6.18m), followed by Utah senior Amanda Feigt (20'-1.00" [6.12m]).

· Air Force junior Travis Picou had the fastest qualifying time in the men's 200m, setting a new MWC Indoor Championship record with a time of 21.09.
