Mountain West Conference Names Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

New Mexico's Lee Emanuel and San Diego State's Decontee Kaye earn the awards

Feb. 12, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico junior Lee Emanuel and San Diego State junior Decontee Kaye have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Two weeks into his New Mexico career, Emanuel, a transfer athlete, established himself as the fastest indoor miler in school history. The Hastings, England, native, receives his first career weekly honor after clocking a time of 4:02.47 to break a 24-year-old Lobo record by 1.73 seconds on Saturday at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Emanuel finished sixth among collegiate athletes in the event, defeating numerous notable racers including two-time all-American Sam Blair of Pittsburgh and Big 10 Conference 1,500-meter champion and all-American Justin Switzer of Michigan. His time provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships while ranking third in the league this season and 19th in the country, according to TrackShark.com.

Kaye, hailing from Hayward, Calif., receives her second career weekly honor after provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the long jump at the Bronco Invitational in Nampa, Idaho. Kaye set the Aztec school record in the long jump on the first day of competition with a leap of 20'-2.25" while competing in a field that included No. 10 Arizona State. She improved on her previous-best mark by 1'-2.25" to surpass former San Diego State record holder Lisa Domico's mark of 19'-10.25" set in 1999. Kaye's jump currently ranks first in the Conference and is tied for the 21st best mark nationally, according to TrackShark.com.
