BYU Sweeps Fourth Straight MWC Track and Field Championships

The Cougar men have now won eight straight outdoor championships, while the BYU women won their seventh MWC title in eight years.

San Diego, Calif. - The BYU men and women swept the team titles for the fourth straight season at the 2007 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at The Sports Deck on the campus of San Diego State University, Saturday afternoon. The Cougar men have now won eight straight outdoor championships, while the BYU women won their seventh MWC title in eight years.

On the men's side, the Cougars scored 214 points, followed by second-place Colorado State (166 points). Air Force finished third with 146 points, with TCU (fourth, 123 points), Wyoming (fifth, 88 points) and New Mexico (sixth, 75 points) rounding out the men's field. TCU's Delwayne Delaney was honored as the men's high point award winner (22.50 points), BYU's Niklas Arrhenius earned the Outstanding Performance Award, breaking the MWC Championship record in the discus throw with a mark of 203'-2.00" (61.92m), TCU's Dell Guy was awarded the Freshman of the Year award and Cougars' head coach Mark Robison was named men's Coach of the Year.

For the women, BYU scored 195 points, TCU was second with 152 points, San Diego State was third with 128 points and Colorado State finished fourth with 119 points, while New Mexico finished fifth (68 points), Utah finished sixth with 49.50 points, Air Force finished seventh with 47.50 points, Wyoming finished eighth with 42 points and UNLV finished ninth with 18 points. Colorado State's Emily Pearson earned the High Point Award (24.50 points) and UNLV's Charlotte Browning was named Freshman of the Year, while BYU's Whitney McDonald garnered the Outstanding Performance Award accolades with her MWC meet record time of 16:00.16 in the 5,000-meter run. BYU's Craig Poole was named women's Coach of the Year.
