BYU Men and Women Lead After Day Three of 2007 MWC Outdoor Track Championships

Events for the final day of competition will begin at Noon (MT).

PROVO, Utah - After the third day of competition at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the BYU men and women lead their respective fields. The Cougar men lead with 101 points, while the women have a score of 69.

On the men's side, Air Force is in second place with 58 points, followed by Colorado State (57), Wyoming (50), and TCU (19) and New Mexico (19). For the women, Colorado State is second with 64 points, while San Diego State is in third (45), New Mexico fourth (40), followed by Utah (21.50), TCU (14), Wyoming (12), Air Force (11.50) and UNLV (three).

The MWC Championships will resume on Saturday at The Sports Deck on the campus of San Diego State. Events for the final day of competition will begin at Noon (MT).

MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Notes:

  • New Mexico's Katie Coronado won the women's javelin throw with a mark of 162'-2.00" (49.44m), replacing her previous distance of 161'-11.00" (49.36m) as the fourth-best toss in MWC Championship history.
  • BYU's David Pendergrass won his third consecutive title (fourth overall) in the men's high jump with a mark of 7'-2.50" (2.20m). Pendergrass' jump surpassed his mark of 7'-0.50" (2.15m) (2006 MWC Championship) as the second-best in MWC Championship history.
  • TCU's Jonathan Jackson, the 2006 men's outdoor triple jump champion, finished first in the long jump with a leap of 23'-6.00" (7.16m).
  • New Mexico junior Tiyana Peters won the women's high jump with an NCAA regional qualifying leap of 5'-8.75" (1.75m). Peters also won the high jump at the 2007 MWC Indoor Track Championships. 2006 outdoor champion Mindy Neeley (BYU) also finished with a mark of 1.75m, finishing second based on Peters clearing a height of 1.65m on her first attempt and Neeley not clearing that height on her initial attempt. BYU's Sarah Lacey finished third with a mark of 5'-7.00" (1.70m).
  • BYU's Amy Fowler helped BYU continue its dominance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she crossed the finish line first in a regional qualifying time of 10:26.09. Fowler's time is the fourth-best in MWC Championship history. The Cougars have now won all seven steeplechase events in conference outdoor championship history. The top-five finishers in the event all ran NCAA regional qualifying times. BYU's Kassi Andersen (10:28.90), Katie Bowen (10:34.79) and Tawny Bybee (10:39.20) finished second, third and fourth, respectively, while Colorado State's Kristen Hemphill (10:39.61) finished fifth.
  • Colorado State's Rob Watson won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a MWC Championship record time of 8:53.12. His time is also an NCAA regional qualifying mark. BYU's Chandler Goodwin was the next runner to cross the finish line (8:59.97), while Wyoming's Philemon Tanui (9:00.66), and BYU's Derek Taylor (9:11.47) and Jacob Cosby (9:12.77) rounded out the top-five. Chandler and Tanui also regionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
  • Colorado State's Alex Godell won the men's hammer throw with a regional qualifying throw of 197'-10.00" (60.29m). Eight of the nine throwers qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the event as the Rams finished all four of their competitors in the top-six.
  • Led by Deborah Jones' (TCU) time of 53.11, four of the nine qualifiers in the women's 400-meter dash regionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. The other regional qualifiers are New Mexico's Ariel Burr, TCU's Nathandra John and San Diego State's Nicole Stone.
  • Led by Kishelle Paul's (TCU) time of 13.74, the top-four finishers in the preliminary round of the women's 400-meter dash all regionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
  • Colorado State's Drew Morano (46.15) and TCU's Dell Guy (47.03) finished 1-2 in the first heat of the 400-meter dash preliminaries, both regional qualifying times. Morano's clocking in the race is the second-fastest in both MWC Championship history and all-time conference history. New Mexico's Jarrin Solomon (47.54), Air Force's Nicholas Luina (47.61) and BYU's Chris Carter (48.52) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively, to round out the top-five qualifiers.
  • TCU's Justyn Warner finished with the top time in the preliminary round of the men's 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a NCAA qualifying time of 10.43. The Horned Frogs' Delwayne Delaney also qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 10.48.
  • BYU junior Ashley McCallister brought home the women's pole vault individual title, clearing a height of 13'-4.50" (4.08m). The top-nine finishers in the pole vault all cleared regional qualifying standards. Cougar senior Kelly Furr matched that height, finishing in second-place. McCallister and Furr's marks are tied for the third-best in MWC Championship history and tied for fourth-highest all-time in MWC history.
  • Wyoming senior Shannon Popp won the women's hammer throw title with a regional qualifying heave of 193'-9.00" (59.06m), which is the fifth best mark in MWC Championship history.
  • Air Force senior Matthew Schwandt won the 2007 men's javelin throw with a mark of 207'-2.00" (63.14m), a regional qualifying distance.
  • Air Force sophomore Sean Houseworth won the men's 10,000 meters in a time of 30:50.98.
  • TCU senior McKale Davis won the women's 10,000 meters in a time of 36:22.75.
