BYU MEN AND WOMEN BRING HOME MWC INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -­ The BYU men and women were victorious in the 2007 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Cougar men won their fifth straight title, while the women won their sixth crown in seven years.

On the men's side, Colorado State finished second (143), followed by Air Force (103), Wyoming (100), TCU (69) and New Mexico (62). CSU also placed second in the women's competition (122 points), with TCU (116) and San Diego State (76) finishing third and fourth, respectively. Wyoming came in fifth (47), while Utah (45), New Mexico (38), Air Force (21) and UNLV (18) rounded out the scoring.

1. BYU - 180; 2. Colorado State - 143; 3. Air Force - 103; 4. Wyoming - 100; 5. TCU - 69; 6. New Mexico - 62.

Men's Outstanding Performance - Kevin Johnson, CSU (Heptahtlon)

Women's Outstanding Performance - Stephanie Bagan, SDSU (Pole Vault)

Men's High Point Award - Kevin Johnson, CSU (28)

Women's High Point Award - Virgil Hodge, TCU (22.50)

Men's Freshman of the Year - Dell Guy, TCU

Women's Freshman of the Year - Neidra Covington, TCU

2007 MWC Indoor Track and Field Championships Notes:

New Mexico junior Tiyana Peters won the women's high jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5-10.00 (1.78m). Her mark is tied for the third-best in championship history. Colorado State freshman Sonni Russell finished second with a leap of 5-08.75 (1.75m).

Colorado State senior Kevin Johnson, became the second straight Ram to win the men's 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.04 to edge Air Force sophomore Kellen Curry (8.06) and BYU senior Nate Rencher (8.08), who finished second and third, respectively.

 

 

Wyoming finished 1-2 in the women's 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Adriana Friezen was first to cross the finish line in 8.48 seconds, followed by teammate junior Shaylee Babbitt (8.49). 2006 champion Kishelle Paul (TCU) finished third (8.59).

TCU junior Virgil Hodge had a very successful day on the track as she automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200-meter dash and provisionally qualified in the 60-meter, bringing home the conference title in both races. Her time of 23.27 in the 200 also set a new all-time record in the MWC, as well as an Albuquerque Convention Center record. In the 60m dash, her mark of 7.37 bested Colorado State senior Janay Deloach (7.42), who also provisionally qualified for NCAA's, and teammate Jamee Jones, who crossed the finish line in 7.55.

TCU senior Delwayne Delaney gave the Horned Frog men their second consecutive MWC title in the men's 60-meter dash, winning with a time a provisional time of 6.68. Air Force junior Travis Picou finished second in 6.74, while last year's champion Justyn Warner from TCU finished third in 6.74. Picou edge Warner when the time was taken to the thousandths 6.731-6.739.

BYU sophomore Heidi Magill led a 1-2 Cougar finish in the women's mile, winning the event with a provisional time of 4:54.04. Cougar junior Julie Meads finished second 4:58.27, while 2006 champion Calandra Stewart ran third (4:59.20).

BYU's men swept the top-3 spots in the mile, led by junior Dustin Bybee (4:17.34). Juniors Kyle Perry (4:17.57) and Tyrel Jensen (4:18.40) followed Bybee across the finish.
