2008 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Underway

Wyoming leads the men's scoring, while BYU paces the women after the first day of competition.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -

The Wyoming men's and BYU women's swimming and diving teams lead the rankings with 116 and 111 points, respectively, through day one of the 2008 MWC Swimming and Diving Championships. UNLV is second for the men with 96 points, while Wyoming is second in the women's competition with 102 points.

TCU is third in the men's standings with 94 points, followed by Air Force (88), BYU (82) and Utah (58). For the women, Colorado State is third with 87 points, followed by Utah (78), UNLV (74), New Mexico (61), TCU (59), San Diego State (55) and Air Force (36).

Day two events begin with the men's one-meter springboard and men's 500 freestyle at 10 a.m. CST. The finals competition starts at 6 p.m. CST. The MWC Swimming and Diving Championships conclude Saturday, March 1.

NOTES:

  • The UNLV women broke the MWC all-time record in the 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:40.23. Both the Rebels and BYU (1:41.21) swam NCAA-B qualifying times.
  • The Rebel men won their sixth 200 medley relay title in seven years, clocking an NCAA-B qualifying time of 1:28.72.
  • BYU's Tawni Jones won her first one-meter diving crown with a score of 279.85. Jones placed fourth in last year's championship. Wyoming's Stephanie Ortiz (271.00) and Brittany Wainwright (265.70) finished second and third, respectively.
  • TCU's R.J. Hesselberg brought home the Horned Frogs' second individual title as members of the Conference, scoring 359.80 in the three-meter springboard. Wyoming's Mark Murdock finished second with 338.10 points, while Horned Frog freshman Joseph Callens scored 310.55 to place third. Wyoming's Kyle Bogner (fourth) and Tyler Miller (fifth) rounded out the top-five with scores of 307.10 and 303.30, respectively.
  • The UNLV men set a new all-time Conference record with their time of 6:29.39 in the 800 freestyle relay. The Rebels broke BYU's mark of 6:30.99 which was set at the 2003 championships. The victory was UNLV's third consecutive in the event and fourth overall since joining the Conference.
  • The BYU women's 800 freestyle relay team won their third championship in a row, finishing the race in a NCAA-B qualifying time of 7:18.88. Utah also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship with a time of 7:22.44.
