UNLV Wins Third Straight Men's MWC Swimming and Diving Championship BYU wins sixth women's team title

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The UNLV men edged out BYU by 15 points to take home its third consecutive Mountain West Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship with 699.5 team points, while the Cougar women won their sixth women's team title in eight years with 747 points Saturday night at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatics Center. The BYU men had 684.5 points, followed by Air Force with 633. Wyoming (520), Utah (459.5) and TCU 431.5) rounded out the standings. Following BYU with 618 points was last year's champion, Utah. UNLV was next at 527, followed by Wyoming (480), Colorado State (406), TCU (394), New Mexico (260) Air Force (173) and San Diego State (145). Awards were announced at the conclusion of the meet, as Utah repeated two awards. Ute seniors Amber Walter and Kelsey Patterson were named women's Swimmer and Diver of the Year, respectively. BYU's Stan Crump was voted as the women's Swimming Coach of the Year, while the Cougars' Keith Russell was named both the women's and men's Diving Coach of the Year. Seniors Chris Knaute (Air Force) and Brett Allen (BYU) shared men's Swimmer of the Year honors, while BYU freshman Brandon Watson was named the men's Diver of the Year. Rob Clayton of Air Force was voted as the men's Swimming Coach of the Year. Knaute and BYU's Brittany Davis-Burk were this year's Senior Award winners. The All-MWC team was also announced, led by UNLV on the men's side with 12 individual honorees and BYU's 14 women's individual awards.
NOTES - BYU junior Angela Goodson set her second MWC Championship and all-time record of the week with a 2:01.14 in the morning prelims of the 200 fly. She won the event finals in 2:01.22 and also set the 100 fly record yesterday. She completed her sweep of individual events with a victory in the 200 IM Thursday. - UNLV junior Johan Claar upset Air Force senior Chris Knaute by 46 hundredths of a second in the men's 1650 free. Claar's time of 15:16.41 prevented Knaute from becoming just the second men's swimmer to win the same race four consecutive years and also from setting an MWC record with 10 individual championship wins. - BYU senior Brittany Davis-Burk became the second women's swimmer to win the same race four consecutive years with a 1:59.99 in the 200 back. BYU's Tamber (Covington) McAllister won the 200 breast from 2001-04. It also marked Davis-Burk's ninth individual title, making her the second women's swimmer in league history to win nine titles. UNLV's Lorena Diaconescu won nine individual races from 2000-02 - Utah senior Amber Walter completed a sweep of her individual events with a 50.09 NCAA-B qualifying mark in the 100 free. Walter also won the 50 free and the 100 breast earlier in the meet. - UNLV's Jonas Andersson became the first Rebel to win the men's 200 breast, snapping Wyoming's five-year winning streak in the event with a 1:58.17 clocking. - Wyoming senior Ron Fogel repeated as the men's 200 fly champion with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 1:47.36. - Air Force senior Brady Lindberg won his second consecutive men's platform diving title with 336.25 points, edging out BYU freshman Brandon Watson by just 3.90 points to prevent Watson from sweeping this year's diving events. - The BYU women set its second relay record of the meet with a 3:22.47 in the 400 free relay. That time is an MWC Championship and all-time record from the team of sophomore Leilani Roberts, freshman Kirsty Ferrell, freshman Natasha Menezes and senior Brittany Davis-Burk. - The UNLV men's relay team of junior Richard Hortness, senior John Byers, junior Johan Claar and senior Brandon Nelms won its third straight 400 freestyle relay title in 2:57.80. |
