MWC Swimmers and Women's Diver of the Week Award Announced

UNLV's Johan Claar named Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week, while San Diego State sweeps women's honors.

Jan. 9, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV senior Johan Claar was named Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week, while San Diego State sophomores Jessica Morrill and Caitlin Atkinson were named women's swimmer and diver of the Week, respectively.

Claar, from Bankeryd, Sweden, won two events at the UCI Sprint and Distance Invitational last week in Irvine, Calif., setting meet records in both events in the process. He won the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 9:12.52, which broke his own meet record and is the fastest time in the Conference this season. He then took first in the 200 freestyle, again breaking his own meet record as he finished in a time of 1:41.48. Claar also placed third in the 500 freestyle in 4:46.48.

Morrill, a Rio Vista, Calif., native, led the Aztecs to a 2-0 record in their conference double dual against Air Force (167-63) and TCU (169-129) last weekend in San Diego. She was San Diego State's only double winner of the day as she was victorious in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke. Her times in the 100 breast (1:07.43) and the 200 breast (2:22.97) were both season-bests. Morrill also swam the second leg of SDSU's "B" squad that won the 200-medley relay in a time of 1:51.72.

Atkinson, from Laguna Niguel, Calif., was victorious in the 1-meter diving event, while finishing second in the 3-meter dive against Air Force and TCU. She captured the 1-meter board with a NCAA Zone E Diving Regional qualifying score of 269.10. Atkinson also placed second in the three-meter event with a score of 261.60. Both of her point totals were season-bests.
